The musical, Back To The Future, a project that was long overdue, was thought of way back two decades ago, when the wife of one of the creators, Zemeckis, become curious about the concept of the film being adapted for the stage. The musical was ready to open in 2015, as a reference to the sequel to the original motion picture (which was released in 1989), yet the stage adaptation was delayed unintentionally and ultimately debuted at the Manchester Opera House, then after a year, relocated to London’s Adelphi Theater after the COVID outbreak.
The musical, besides a couple of trivial modifications, shows the sci-fi trip of Marty McFly as he gets transported through time to the year 1955, 30 years prior to the story’s setting. Furthermore, given the flexibility of staged plays, Back To The Future The Musical was allowed to take advantage of creative freedoms that greatly leveled up the production. Both optically and audibly, the film-turned-musical has stunning implementation. The musical makes use of the most advanced equipment available in Broadway and makes the whole set feel alive, with the set design, scene lighting, audio direction, and 3D elements all blending with each other exceedingly well. The DeLorean as an example, (which is the time-traveling car that is central to the plot) by the time the car is introduced on stage, is done so perfectly that viewers have raved about.
Focusing on only video editing, the musical also undoubtedly raises the standard. Animation creator Finn Ross implements 3D editing quite well that each backdrop functions as an almost lifelike illusion that sets the mood of the live sets gracefully. Finn Ross even reveals that in each animation “It has to look like a natural part of the musical. From time to time the team did take inspiration from tangible locales, but the production wished to get this relative vivid reimagining to go with the amount of zest the musical exists on.”
