Fraudster, Professor Harold Hill, a traveling sales agent arrives in a a town called River City, a town well known for its mistrust towards new people. Harold decides to conceive a strategy to rob the towns folk of their money. He does this by convincing the inhabitants to start a boys band and that they must purchase the instruments and uniforms from him.

With his made up amazing “Think System”, a system of which simply allows a person to think of a tune and magically learn how to play it. His strategy starts to work. The families start handing over their hard-earned money.

Librarian and Piano teacher, Marian Paroo sees right past the falsehood and is getting prepared to hand him over to the authorities but something dissuades her. Harold helps her brother to overcome his social awkwardness with the arrival of a new instrument, which this melts her heart.
