Synopsis
Get transported into the golden era of broadcast journalism and Edward R. Murrow’s legendary, history-changing, on-air showdown with Senator Joseph McCarthy. When Senator Joseph McCarthy begins his reckless campaign to root out Communists in the U.S., Edward R. Murrow is determined to expose the atrocities being committed by McCarthy’s Senate investigation. As McCarthyism casts a shadow over the United States, Edward R. Murrow and his team at CBS decide to stand up to the growing tide of paranoia and propaganda, even if that means turning the federal government and a scared nation against them.
Creative Team
Good Night, and Good Luck is helmed by the star-studded Tony Award®-winning director David Cromer. As a director, David Cromer’s New York credits include The Sound Inside (Broadway); The Band’s Visit (Atlantic Theater Company, Broadway & National Tour); the Broadway revivals of Brighton Beach Memoirs and The House of Blue Leaves; The Treasurer (Playwrights Horizons); Man from Nebraska (Second Stage Theatre); The Effect, Orson’s Shadow, and Tribes (Barrow Street Theatre); Women or Nothing (Atlantic Theater Company); Really Really (MCC Theater); as well as When the Rain Stops Falling and Nikolai and the Others (Lincoln Center Theater).
Good Night, and Good Luck stars George Clooney as Edward R. Murrow. The Hollywood A-lister also co-wrote the show with longtime producing and writing partner Grant Heslov. The play is based on the 2005 smash hit movie of the same name, also written by Geogre Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you didn’t already know, Grant Heslov is an American actor and filmmaker known and loved around the world for his producing and writing collaborations with George Clooney, which have snagged him an impressive four Oscar nominations. Together, the talented co-writers won an Academy Award for Best Picture for the 2012 film Argo in 2013. Other collaborations between the pair include 2005’s Good Night, and Good Luck, 2008’s Letterheads, 2011’s The Ides of March, 2014’s The Monuments Men, and 2020’s The Midnight Sky.
History and Awards
While the Good Night, and Good Luck hasn’t opened its curtains on Broadway yet, we expect the production to sweep the Tony Awards. The show is based on the 2005 movie which won big at the film awards, including a whopping six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the Academy Awards; an impressive four nominations at the 2006 Golden Globe Awards; as well as even more nominations at the 2005 BAFTA Awards. Good Night, and Good Luck was such a hit with audiences that it was named one of the Top Ten Movies of 2005.
“Clooney does a magnificent job of taking us to the time period and it really feels like you’re peeking into an actual event instead of watching a movie about it. The black and white, mixed with the constant swirling of cigarette smoke that seems to permeate most of the film, gives it a gritty yet realistic feel. The script and dialogue are all top notch and very naturalistic, adding to the documentary-esque feel to the minimalist presentation. The cast is also outstanding” cheers Home Theater.
The movie featured a star-studded cast, including George Clooney as Fred Friendly, David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow, Patricia Clarkson as Shirley Wershba, Robert Downey Jr. as Joe Wershba, Jeff Daniels as Sig Mickelson, and Grant Heslov as Don Hewitt. And with this stage production featuring George Clooney and based on the movie script, we already know it’s going to be nothing short of spectacular on Broadway!
George Clooney is set to play the role of Edward R. Murrow in a strictly limited engagement, with only 99 performances scheduled. Beginning previews on March 12, the show officially opens on April 3 at New York’s Winter Garden Theatre.

“There are a certain kind of people wired in a certain kind of way, who know there’s a story behind the story if you’re bold enough, if you’re passionate enough to speak out, if you’re brave enough to stand up to the forces determined to keep you silent,” Clooney’s Murrow says in the trailer. “No matter the consequences. There are a certain kind of people who are the lifeblood of democracy, never wavering, never faltering, never straying in their pursuit of what matters — and what matters? Honesty. Facts. Integrity. Accuracy. Truth. Good night, and good luck.”
